About Lanzarote
 

This is volcano country, known as the Isla del Fuego or Fire Island. Most of Lanzarote is covered with solidified lava and peppered with nearly 300 volcano peaks. Many tourists stick to the coast, especially on the northern shores although the more adventurous head inland to explore Lanzarote's amazing lunar landscape.
 

Lanzarote, called 'Conejera' by the islanders, is also known as the island of 100 volcanoes. Its volcanic origin has created a landscape with more than 300 volcanoes. Lanzarote has 213km of coastline, of which 10km are sand, 16.5km of beaches, the remainder are rocky. Lanzarote has mountainranges, Famara (671 m) to the north and Ajaches (608 m) to the south. The El Jable desert is south of Famara massif and seperates Famara and Montañas del Fuego.

.Lanzarote landscape has palm trees, almost the only kind of native tree life, are found in the banks of the barrancos and the bottoms of the valleys. The palm groves of Haria, situated on the outskirts of the village, deserve a special mention. In general, the island possesses a vegetation composed of species that are adapted to living in hard conditions due to the lack of rain, poor terrain and wind.


With a good deal of flatland, Lanzarote is the least mountainous of the Canary Islands. Due to its low level, Lanzarote is below the level of humid and warm air. In general, this results in a dry climate with little rain. The average temperature is 24° in August and 17° in January. The sea temperature varies between 17° and 24° at the surface.


The island was named after a Genoese navigator called Lancelotto Malocello who arrived on the island during the first half of the XIV century opening the way to successive expeditions of French, British and Spanish sailors and merchants. Tourism is the main islands industry and has been for the past 50 years, other industries include agriculture. Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote and is a natural harbour protected by a barrier of islets and reefs.
