El Hierro Airport

The inauguration of El Hierro airport in 1972 opened the island to air traffic and as such to a new type of tourism. Since then, passenger traffic has increased steadily, except for during two periods: 1982-1984 and 1994-1997. Since 1997, coinciding with the inauguration of the new terminal area, the total number of passengers has risen considerably.

The traffic is entirely domestic, the main origin/destination being Tenerife Norte, followed at some distance by Gran Canaria and La Palma. It has no connections to airports outside the Canary Islands.

El Hierro airport has a single runway, the 16-34 (measuring 1,250 by 30 metres), and an apron with three aircraft stands. The other facilities that make up the airport complex are: the new passenger terminal building, the control tower, the power plant, the car park, the hangar building and the transmitter centre.

In 1990, a new control tower was constructed and work was undertaken to improve the passenger terminal building. During 1991 and 1992 the runway was extended to 1,250 metres. Lastly, the present passenger terminal building was constructed, measuring three thousand square metres.
